STOCK RODS

If you are new to the sport of fishing, the choices of styles, weights, strengths, and manufacturers can be very confusing. We at RRR have designed our basic rods to be all around rods. For the new angler (or the more experienced one) these will provide you with a starting place, and many successful casts.

The “Raquette” is our fly rod. It is a 2 piece available in 7' or 8', and can be ordered in 4, 5, or 6 weights. This is a mat grey blank, with green wrap and silver tipping (accents). It has single foot guides made of black chrome stainless steel. Stainless steel guides are extremely durable and maximizes flexibility without compromising on durability. The cork grip is 7 inches long thread hosel, and we use a wooden reel seat (normally cherry) with a steel uplocking skeleton. Finally, we add a black folding hook keeper. This rod is recommended for trout, bass, and panfish.

Prices:
7'6" 4wt: $188.00
8'6" 5wt: $195.00
9'5" 6wt: $240.00

The “Grasse” is our casting rod. We recommend it for spinner bait, big plug, musky, bass, or pike. This is built on a 7 foot matte grey blank and uses black plated stainless steel double foot guides with Hialoy inserts. The guides are perfectly placed for optimum cast. It is wrapped in black with silver tipping. The cork grip is a full 9 inches to allow both hands to fit comfortably. We employ a “blank through” reel seat which allows for greater sensitivity, and as the seat interior diameter is matched to the blank outside diameter there is less weight from tape and glue, lessening fatigue. We finish it off with a folding hook keeper.

Prices:
6' light: $134.00
6' medium: $140.00
6' medium/heavy: $160.00
6' heavy: $185.00

It has a 2.5 inch foregrip and a 7” reargrip. The reel seat is wood (normally maple) with black stainless steel hardware. The hook keeper is folding and black. We recommend this for trout, bass and steel head.

The Speyside
The advances in composite materials used in blank construction have lead to resurgence in a fly technique known as Spey. Spey fishing was developed in the 1800’s on the river Spey in Scotland’s highlands. High banks made the conventional back casts unadvisable, but the Scots weren’t ready to give up on all those lovely salmon. They started using 15 to 20 foot rods with a two handed side cast to reach the salmon 100 foot or more away. The first rods were heavy and unwieldy, today’s angler can use the same technique but with much lighter rods. Using two-hands to cast rather than one is less taxing on muscles and tendons. Another distinct advantage for the wadding spey fisher is that distant spots become more readily attainable, he doesn’t worry about obstructions at his back, and he is well able to control fly drift at greater ranges than a single handed rod.

When I was researching Spey rods, I couldn’t stop think about a story from my eldest brother’s childhood. Long before my family emigrated to this side of the pond, long, long before I was born, my family would take their holidays in the highlands. When my brother John was nine or ten, the family vacation took them to a small village where John made friends the local mayors’ son. They would spend their days wandering around the fields and streams. In Scotland, in the 1940’s, young boys would wear shorts and pullovers (vesties) with rubber boots (wellies). My Mom being a self respecting Scotswoman, would buy footwear a couple of sizes too big, to make sure we got the good out of them. John and his friend wandered down a small stream and watched the anglers with all their equipment and gear fishing for salmon. As kids will, they had to try it, but they had no rods, no creels nothing. They stepped into the water and slowly worked their way over to the fish and picked them up with their hands. Having nothing with them, they solved the problem of how to get this wonderful dinner home, and not be caught by the game warden, by putting the fish down the wide of their wellies and walking home.

Raquette River Rods offers our Speyside in four lengths, and weights;11.6’@6/7wt, 12.6’@7/8wt, 13’ @8/9wt and 14’@9/10wt. These are built on dark blue graphite blank that is light weight but strong, they provide a medium fast action and are beginner friendly. The guides are stainless steel finished with black chrome, and wrapped in cobalt blue with silver tipping. The fore grip is cork, the reel seat aluminum with a super hard anodized black chrome finish to prevent corrosion and is saltwater safe. The reel seat is made by Forecast and has a setback slide band design. The rear grip is cork with a rubber butt for greater comfort and balance.
